Pneumococcal Vaccination
This vaccine is recommended for all patients over 65 years of age and also those with chronic medical conditions listed below. This vaccine is usually only administered once but it may be repeated in high risk patients in certain clinical scenarios after a 5 year interval. The vaccine is free of charge for those with indications to receive the vaccine, however there is an administration charge for those who do not possess a valid medical card or doctor visit card
Adult patients with the conditions listed below should also receive the pneumococcal vaccination. Children are covered with a different pneumococcal vaccine during the childhood immunisation programme.
- Diabetes
- Chronic lung, heart, liver, or kidney disease
- Chronic neurological disease
- Children aged over 2 years and under 5 years of age with a history of invasive pneumococcal disease
- Coeliac disease
- Down Syndrome
- Cochlear implants or are about to get cochlear implants
- Immune deficiency because of a disease or treatment, including cancer patients
- HIV infection
- Absent spleen or a non-functioning spleen
- CSF leaks, either congenital or complicating skull fractures or neurosurgery
- Intracranial shunt
