Dr Patrick O Donnell

Dr O’Donnell began working with the Park Lodge Medical practice in October 2013.

He initially joined the practice as part of a joint venture between the practice and the Partnership for Health Equity based at the University of Limerick Medical School. Through this Fellowship in Social Inclusion, he worked with the practice focused on the areas health equity and healthcare provision for marginalised groups. He subsequently has proceeded to join the practice as a sessional GP 


He graduated from UCD in 2006. He completed his intern training in the Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise and Sligo Regional Hospital. He then worked in paediatrics in Princess Margaret Hospital, Perth, Western Australia. He then returned to Ireland and began his GP training in Sligo. Having completed this training scheme in 2012, he began a Master’s degree at Trinity College. While studying he worked as a locum GP and did weekly sessions in travel medicine at the Tropical Medical Bureau. He is a Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP).

Areas of interest

Dr O’Donnell has many interests in the field of medicine. He is lecturer in General Practice in  the University of Limerick Medical School. He is a member of the School of Medicine General Practice and Public Health Research Group. His main research areas are in the areas of health equity, social inclusion, homelessness, addiction and the provision of healthcare to people from marginalised groups. He is currently completing a PhD on his research in this area. 

Dr O Donnell in conjunction with the Ana Liffey project and HSE social inclusion have successfully set up clinics in Limerick city for marginalised groups. This would not have been possible without Patrick's leadership, enthusiasm and altruistic nature. We commend him on his achievements

Dr O Donnell was also formally made the HSE CHO3 GP for Social Inclusion in 2021

Dr O Donnell was awarded the UL President's Award for Excellence in Service to the Community in 2019 in recognition of his achievements

Outside interests

Dr O’Donnell swims regularly and likes the cinema.
